How VAC claims work and where we can help

The stages are defined. The route, information and follow-up vary from one veteran to another.

A VAC claim moves through preparation, filing, VAC’s review and a written decision. We agree on a plan, prepare the application with you and review it together so you control what goes to VAC. When it is ready, we help you file it and stay involved through VAC’s review and decision.

Our process

How we work through your VAC claim

These steps describe our work on a new disability claim. If you have already started an application or received a decision, we begin at the point that applies to you.

01

We listen first

In a free 30-minute conversation, we learn about your service, your health and any contact you have already had with VAC. You can tell us what you are trying to do or where you have become stuck. You do not need to arrive with a complete set of documents.

02

We identify the right route

We discuss which VAC benefits may be relevant and whether your situation calls for a new claim, a review or appeal, a reassessment, or another kind of support. We explain the role we could play and other available support options. You decide whether to work with us.

03

We bring the right information together

We help identify what your claim needs and bring the pieces together, from the details only you can provide to medical information from health professionals and records VAC obtains from the Department of National Defence or Library and Archives Canada. Where appropriate, we coordinate appointments, track what is outstanding and keep you informed.

04

We apply experience and research to the details

We look at the information relevant to your circumstances, including service and trade history, available records, historical context and relevant precedent from similar cases where useful. Experience across thousands of claims helps us know where additional questions or research may be needed.

05

We prepare the application with your input

We draft the application from what you have shared and go through it together. You can ask questions, correct details and make sure your experience is represented accurately. You decide what will go to VAC.

06

We help you file and follow up

After you approve the application, we help you file the claim. VAC reviews it and may request further information. We help you understand those requests and what needs your attention.

07

We go through the decision with you

When VAC issues the decision, we explain the letter and discuss the options relevant to your situation. That may mean understanding an approved benefit, considering a review or appeal, or looking at other support and benefits you or your family may need afterward.

Why some veterans choose hands-on help

Veterans can apply directly to VAC, and free support options are available. For many people the hard part is not the forms. It is working out which route applies, what information is needed and keeping the moving pieces and follow-up on track. Our team has seen many service histories, health circumstances and claim routes, and brings that experience to your situation while treating every claim on its own facts.

Clear fees. Support from start to finish.

Conversations with our team are always free and never commit you to using our services. If you choose to work with us, our fee is 10% on a successful claim. That fee reflects the full support we provide, from research and preparation to helping you file, coordinating appointments, organizing documentation, tracking what is outstanding, explaining VAC updates and decisions, and helping you understand the benefits and supports available to you.

You only pay if your claim is successful, and we explain the fee and terms clearly before you decide to proceed.

How long it takes

The time needed to prepare a claim depends on your circumstances and the information required. VAC’s review time also varies. We explain the steps within our control and keep you informed when VAC needs something further. We cannot guarantee when VAC will decide a claim or what the decision will be.

270 West Consulting is independent and is not affiliated with Veterans Affairs Canada. VAC makes decisions about eligibility and benefits.
